Background information
When considering transit traffic to Russia, South-East Finland is an extremely important region: the most frequently used border crossing points to Russia, as well as Kotka and Hamina – two remarkable harbours in transit traffic to Russia – are located there. From the point of view of transit traffic to Russia, also Hanko, Helsinki, Turku and Loviisa are very important harbours. In addition, Vuosaari is included in this project, as it will definitely have an effect on transit traffic in future. In order to consider the big picture of transit traffic routes, E18-highway and the train connection Turku-Helsinki-Lahti-Vainikkala are taken into account as well.
Transit traffic has an influence on the business life in Southern Finland, especially on the logistics companies as well as companies offering value added services in logistics. In Russia the project will be geographically mainly carried out in St. Petersburg, which is the biggest logistics centre in North-West Russia mostly due to its outstanding harbour.
