Research Fields

COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING AND OPTIMIZATION

This focus area concentrates on scientific computing and mathematical modelling of industrial processes based on the conservation laws and resulting partial differential equations. Optimization methods are also developed for optimal shape design, optimal control and multi-objective decision-making problems. Especially Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and CFD-based optimization have a central role in our research. Contact person in CEID: Prof. Jari Hämäläinen

LUT research groups and their contact persons: Laboratory of fluid dynamics, Prof. Jari Backman; Modelling of energy systems, Prof. Timo Hyppänen; Unit process development, modelling, and intensification, Prof. Ilkka Turunen; Centre for Separation Technology (CST), Dr. Vesa Karvonen, Computational modelling of materials, Prof. Matti Alatalo

DATA-DRIVEN COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE

Data-driven computational science deals with computational data analysis and data-based modeling as well as statistical inverse techniques. Focus areas include Bayesian sampling methods, statistical filtering, computer vision and machine learning. Contact person in CEID: Adj.prof. Tuomo Kauranne

LUT research groups and their contact persons: Centre of Excellence (Academy of Finland) on inverse problems, Prof. Heikki Haario; Time series research, fuzzy logic and soft computing, Adj.prof. Tuomo Kauranne; Laboratory of machine vision and pattern recognition (computer vision, machine learning, statistical filtering, intelligent robotics), Prof. Ville Kyrki

VIRTUAL DESIGN OF MACHINES

Virtual design of machines combines expertise on solid mechanics, hydraulics and electronics with scientific computing. Research concentrates on the design, simulation and control of mechatronic machines as well as the multibody dynamics of machines. Contact person in CEID: Prof. Heikki Handroos
