7 June 2012 at 19.00 Sword sharpening
The doctoral sword is a symbolic weapon of the spirit in search for and defence of truth. At LUT, the sword is born by those with a doctorate in business administration or philosophy. The sword is sharpened with due ceremony with the help of a grindstone and sparkling wine. The sword is held by the young doctor, the sparkling wine is poured by his or her companion, and the grindstone is turned by a marshal.

Event by invitation only for all promovendi (and their companions) – also those with the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology.

8 June 2012 at 12.00 Conferment ceremony
The conferment ceremony starts at 12.00 as the academic procession arrives in the auditorium. The audience must be seated by 11.50. After the performance of the orchestra and the rector’s greeting, the conferment address will be given. The actual conferment will be performed by conferrers representing different disciplines. The conferrer presents the doctor with the certificate (and sword) and places the hat on his or her head.

The conferment is followed by the conferment cantata. Before the cantata, however, a question is posed to the doctor primus, whose identity will be revealed in the conferment. The doctor primus (or prima) has completed his or her dissertation and postgraduate studies with distinction.

The ceremony is concluded with the Finnish national anthem, after which the procession exits the auditorium to enjoy refreshments in the foyer.

Event by invitation only; also the university staff is welcome (invitation issued to staff members, instructions later on the intranet).
