A separation unit usually forms part of a complete production process. The design of the separation is then determined by optimisation of the process as a whole, rather than merely the separation unit. Cost, energy and environmental aspects are among the main criteria in such process integration.
Intensification of a separation process means more efficient operation with respect to size, costs and effluents. This is attained, for example, by adjusting hydrodynamic conditions according to the requirements of the separation. Other methods include the utilisation of enhanced gravity fields, magnetic fields and ultrasound, or combining separation with other processes or phenomena.
