Welcome to the IPSERA 2010 Doctoral Workshop!
We would like to welcome all PhD students to the Ipsera 2010 Doctoral Workshop, which takes place on 16 May, the Sunday prior to the Ipsera conference. The program will start at 10.30 a.m. and will include lunch (final program to be confirmed).
In this workshop, PhD students present their proposals and receive feedback from experienced faculty as well as from their peers. We have selected the PhD students who will present, but there is still room for other PhD students to participate as discussants.
You will have the opportunity to participate in the DW Masterclass, build your network with fellow PhD students from various countries, and informally discuss your research with renowned faculty from the Purchasing & Supply Management field.
The Ipsera 2010 DW is a truly international affair, with invited PhD students from Italy, UK, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Australia, and The Netherlands. The invited faculty comes from Italy, UK, Finland, Germany, US, Canada, and The Netherlands.
If you would like to participate in the workshop as a discussant, then please send an e-mail to Dr. Erik van Raaij.
Doctoral workshop
The main objectives of the workshop are two-fold: To assist PhD students in building an international network of fellow PhD students and renowned faculty, and to assist PhD students in developing and improving their research projects.
Participating students will have the opportunity to present their research proposals, which will be discussed by their colleagues and senior faculty. The emphasis will be on methodological issues. Last year, the Doctoral Workshop attracted eighteen PhD students (of which nine presented their proposals), and the Workshop was supported by the following faculty:
Prof. Alessandro Ancarani, University of Catania, Italy
Prof. Michael Essig, University of Munich, Germany
Prof. Fraser Johnson, University of Western Ontario, Canada
Prof. Dirk Jan Kamann, University of Groningen, The Netherlands
Prof. Louise Knight, Aston University, United Kingdom
Prof. Richard Pibernik, EBS International University, Germany
Prof. Asta Salmi, Helsinki School of Economics, Finland
Prof. Finn Wynstra, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Prof. George Zsidisin, Bowling Green State University, USA
The doctoral workshop will be guided by Dr. Erik van Raaij, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University.
Application
Doctoral candidates interested in attending and presenting their research proposals (not results of finished research) should submit a one-page statement of interest by the 4th of December 2009. This statement should contain your name, affiliation, project title, project description, and an indication of where you currently are in the process of completing your doctorate. Please send this statement of interest to Erik van Raaij (eraaij@rsm.nl).
The statements of interest are for planning purposes only. We understand that your actual participation in the workshop may depend on funding and on the outcomes of conference paper reviews. A full research proposal (max. 20 pages) has to be submitted before the 15th of January 2010. The full research proposals will be reviewed. The number of participants in the doctoral workshop is limited. Based on this review process, a maximum of 12 proposals will be accepted for presentation in the workshop.
Review criteria include:
- Clarity of research purpose (relevance, objectives, and research questions)
- Review of relevant literatures
- Thoughtful discussion of research methods
- Stage of the research
The stage of the research is important. It should be a proposal with some level of maturity looking for comments. If it is just an initial idea without plans for execution, there is too little content for our faculty to comment upon. On the other hand, it should neither be a project that is nearly finished, because comments from our faculty would be useless at such a stage. If your doctoral dissertation is designed as a collection of papers, your submission could be a proposal for one of those papers.
We would like to emphasize that we expect all submissions to the doctoral workshop to be research proposals, not finalized manuscripts, conference papers or journal articles.
You will be notified of the review process by the 12th of February 2010. Acceptance of the proposal may be conditional upon minor revisions, and the deadline for the final research proposal will be the 29th of March 2010.
Costs
There will be no extra fee for participation in the Doctoral Workshop. However, participation in the IPSERA 2010 Conference is requested. The first 15 doctoral students registered to the conference will get the reduced fee of 200 €.
Three PhD students will be receiving a bursary to attend the IPSERA Conference. We encourage especially students on a need and merit basis to apply for scholarships. Please contact Helen Walker for further information.
