WHERE CAN I ASK FOR HELP?
In the library, there is the information service helpdesk near the spiral stairs. The desk is open 12-3 daily.
At the helpdesk, you can ask for help in how to use the library or make literature searches.
On the 4th floor, there is the Origo Helpdesk. At this helpdesk, you can e.g. get help in your IT problems, take a maturity test or other exams in the exam aquarium, and borrow various equipment for your studies . |
| JOURNAL ARTICLES |
I WANT TO FIND JOURNAL ARTICLES
1. I have a citation of the article Search in the Nelli portal "Find e-journal" service for online journals. In case you want to find printed journals, use the WILMA database with "Journal title" as the serch type. This way you get the storage information (available volumes and issues) of the searched journal.
2. I want to search articles about a given subject Use the Nelli portal Meta search. There are English help texts in Nelli.
If you know the contents of the available databases, you may want to use them directly. A list of database resources is included in the Nelli portal under the heading Find Database.
For LUT remote access, use the VPN connection. Type your login and password and proceed by searching in the normal way. SUAS users log in to their Nelli for remote access. |
| BOOKS |
I WANT TO FIND AND BORROW BOOKS
All LUT books since 1983 are catalogued in the WILMA database. English help texts are included in the English version of WILMA. Look for more information in the Wilma Survival Guide. After searching the books in WILMA, locate the books in the library according to the WILMA "Call Number" data.
Go to the shelf given in the call number, find the book, and take it to the lending desk for borrowing. You can also use the automatic lending machine near the lending desk. |
| COMPUTERS |
WHERE CAN I USE A COMPUTER?
All computers in Origo are available for customers to use. Note that there are different computers for LUT and SUAS students and personnel. There is no reservation system. The work stations in computer classes Sini (7439) and Cosini (7430) can also be used by LUT students and staff if there is no teaching going on.
It's not allowed to connect your own laptop to the local network. There are data and power cables for customer laptops in front of the computer class Sini. |
| DICTIONARIES |
ARE THERE DICTIONARIES AVAILABLE FOR BORROWING?
There are only a few dictionaries available for lending in the collections. Most of them have Finnish as the other language.
If you need a Finnish-English, French, German, Swedish, or Spanish dictionary, you can use the NetMOT dictionary online. NetMOT icons can be found on the desktop of the LUT customer computers. SUAS users find the NetMOT in Nelli. Remote use is allowed and performed via VPN (LUT) or Nelli login (SUAS). |

CAN I MAKE AN INTERLIBRARY LOAN REQUEST?
If you need a book or journal article which is not included in our collections, you can make an interlibrary loan request. You'll have to pay for this service. |
| PHOTOCOPIES |
WHERE CAN I TAKE PHOTOCOPIES?
In the library, there is a multifunction printer for LUT customers near the lending desk. Activate your grey plastic key for printing and copying on it. SUAS customer are advised to scan and print the documents they want to copy. Other customers can ask about printing at the lending desk. One b/w page costs 10 cents. |
| PRINTERS |
HOW CAN I USE THE PRINTERS?
There are separate printers available for LUT and SUAS customers. They are placed near the workstations. LUT students and staff can send their prints to the Follow line and collect the prints from any multifunction printer within the LUT network. |
PRINTING QUOTA |
HOW MANY SHEETS AM I ALLOWED TO PRINT?
Each student has a printing quota according to the decisions of their faculty/school. LUT students can buy additional printing quota at the Aalef bookstore. |
SLOW PRINTING |
WHY IS PRINTING SOMETIMES SO SLOW?
Some print formats are slow. Especially some pdf documents can be problematic. You can't do anything but wait. In desperate cases, cancel the job from the printer.
You can check the state of the printer by viewing the print queue: Start -> Printers and faxes, double click your printer icon. If you have prints waiting in the middle of the queue and don't want to wait any longer, you can cancel your own job from the queue. |
| DEAD FULLTEXT LINKS |
WHILE TRYING TO DISPLAY A FULL TEXT ARTICLE, THE SYSTEM ASKS FOR LOGIN
In some databases, the library has full text access to just part of the items. Although there is the PDF link, you are not allowed to display the full text and you are asked for password. This can be confusing because the library doesn't have a password to display these articles.

| RENEWALS |
HOW CAN I RENEW MY LOANS?
You can renew a loan at the lending desk or online. Renewal is possible if there are no reservations for the book. You can go to the lending desk and ask the librarian to renew your loans or go online and use the Patron Information option in the WILMA database.

| RESERVATIONS |
I WANT TO RESERVE A BOOK
Reservations can be made on charged (=lent out) material only. You can reserve a book online or, if you prefere, go to the lending desk and fill the reservation form. When the book is returned to the library, you will be informed via your e-mail that it is available for you.
Use the Patron Information/Renewals option. There are instructions for online renewals behind the top links of Wilma search pages.
For reserving a reference textbook (those with a yellow back tape), please, read the instructions at the lending desk. |
| RETURNING BOOKS |
WHERE CAN I RETURN THE BORROWED BOOKS?
Return the books to the lending desk. If the library is closed, you can return the books in a letterbox which you find at the main door of the library (3rd floor).

ROOMS FOR INDIVIDUAL AND GROUPWORK |
ARE THERE ROOMS FOR GROUPWORK?
2nd floor (ground floor): Doppler, Einstein, Faraday, and Galilei are available for LUT and SUAS students. 4th floor: Alfa, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Tangentti are for LUT students (and staff) only
What about rooms for individual study? 4th floor: Silent study room and all day round (LUT and SUAS) and open study halls (LUT). Ground floor: Thesis writing room Theseus (24/7) for those working on their final thesis. Ask the person on call at the Origo helpdesk for the seats in Theseus. (LUT and SUAS)

MAY I USE A SCANNER?
Yes, there are scanners available. On both the 3rd and the 4th floor there are scanners for LUT students. SUAS students have a scanner on the ground floor. There is also a scanner that requires no login on the ground floor.
