The Lappeenranta University of Technology is located in the best university town in Finland. This excellent position is based on the questionnaire conducted by the National Union of University Students in Finland and Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) among the students in 2006. (*
In practise, the merits of Lappeenranta from a student’s point of view include the ease of finding accommodation. The town of Lappeenranta, Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation (LOAS), and the Lappeenranta University of Technology have agreed on a housing guarantee. The guarantee ensures that all students who begin their studies at the university will be offered accommodation in Lappeenranta.
Accommodation is organized either through LOAS, the municipal housing company Lappeenrannan Asuntopalvelu, or the accommodation service of the Lappeenranta University of Technology’s student union. LOAS alone has approximately 3100 flats, which are located in the best residential areas in town within walking or cycling distance of the educational institutions. The student flats nearest the university are located on the Skinnarila campus only a couple of hundred metres from the university’s main building. The various types of flats include shared housing, one room flats, and family flats – something for everyone.
Another attraction of Lappeenranta is its size. It is a suitably-sized town for living, the good level of prices providing an additional extra: accommodation, living, and transport is more economical than in large cities.
Lappeenranta also offers activities near to its residents, which means that no time is wasted by travelling back and forth. Shops, recreational facilities, and other leisure time activities are located quite literally around the corner. Students can continue to pursue their interests just as they did at home. In addition to various activity groups and guilds managed by the student union, the town offers opportunities for all kinds of activities. Saipa, Namika, and NST offer national top-level sports entertainment, while other cultural activities include theatre, orchestral performances, choirs, and dance - all this naturally in a pleasant setting on the shores of blue Lake Saimaa.
