Finland is a parliamentary democracy with a stable, competitive economy, and a President as Head of State. Finland has also been a member of the European Union since the start of 1995. Finnish and Swedish are the official languages. Around 5 percent of the population speak Swedish. English is also commonly spoken, particularly amongst the young.

Finnish companies are among the world’s leaders in mobile telephone communications, meteorological instruments and field devices, and in some areas of biotechnology and pharmaceutics.
