LUT’s information technology students win technology competition

Students of information technology at Lappeenranta University of Technology finished first in the Finnish semi-finals of the Microsoft ImagineCup.

The team, composed of international students of information technology, will represent Finland in the finals in Cairo in June. In addition, the team will have a chance to showcase its work to President of the Republic Tarja Halonen at the end of May. The members of the team are Mubeen Khan, Qianting Liu, Were Oyomno and Ehab Aboudaya.

Also other teams from Lappeenranta were successful in the competition. Another team from LUT finished second, and a team from the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences was fourth.

For LUT’s Laboratory of Communications Engineering, the semi-finals were a success story because all of the works submitted were a result of the NET Code Camp arranged at the end of January. The Code Camp was organised by LUT with the participation of Helsinki University of Technology and Tampere University of Technology.

”Without an open, innovative atmosphere, these works would not have been created. This is a result of the long-standing efforts of the Laboratory of Communications Engineering to develop quality in education and teaching methods,” says Professor Jari Porras.

ImagineCup is the world’s largest annual technology contest for students. Teams that take part in the competition search for solutions to different problems with the help of technology. This year, the problems were related to the global development targets of the UN.
