LUT’s Pussi publishes paper in top physics journal

Academy Research Fellow Katariina Pussi and an international group of researchers have published an article in the top physics journal Physical Review Letters. Also the cover of the journal was dedicated to the article. In addition, the paper received recognition as the Editor’s suggestion, which means that the editorial staff thought the article was well-written and easily understandable to the general public.

A popularised version of Pussi’s article will also be spotlighted in the Viewpoints of the online journal Physics.

Pussi, who works at LUT, and her group of researchers have carried out important work in nanotechnology in terms of both applications and methods. Their study has determined the structure fullerenes form on a silver surface. Fullerene is a form of coal. Nanomaterials based on coal are currently a very popular topic for research.

”Physical Review Letters has traditionally been the top physics journal according to the Impact Index. Pussi’s article has received exceptional praise in the journal,” says Veli-Matti Virolainen, Vice-rector in charge of research.

”This is the best kind of internationalisation for LUT: we are a highly valued and interesting partner. In accordance with our strategy, we aim for high-level international publications. Pussi is an excellent example for other LUT researchers,” Virolainen continues.

Katariina Pussi is part of an international group of 12 researchers, with members from the USA, Germany and the UK. ”We have shared interests, but we all have our own funding. We will continue our research further. Next, we will study fullerene on gold and aluminium,” relates Pussi.

The article also contains experimental and theoretical research results. Pussi’s role in the research was to determine the structure of fullerene on a silver surface with the computational LEED method. The work requires a high-level computing capacity. Pussi used a super computer at CSC – the IT Centre for Science, and LUT’s own cluster.

Katariina Pussi works at LUT at the Department of Mathematics and Physics, in the scientific computing research group headed by Professor Matti Alatalo.
