ECTS
ECTS, the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, is in use at Lappeenranta University to facilitate the student exchange. ECTS credit transfer and accumulation system is also the institutional credit system, which each faculty or department use at LUT.
The information package, which provides general information on the host institution, as well as detailed descriptions of the degrees, programmes and courses available, and the transcript of records, which shows the learning achievements of the students prior to and after the period of study abroad are the essential tools in student exchnage. The transcript records every course taken by the student and includes the number of ECTS credits completed, as well as the grade awarded according to the local grading scale. ECTS grading scale is not in use at LUT.
ECTS credits are a value allocated to course units to describe the student workload required to complete them. They reflect the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full year of academic study at the institution that is, lectures, practical work, seminars, private work - in the library or at home - and examinations or other assessment activities. ECTS credits express a relative value.
In ECTS 60 credits represent the workload equivalent to one year of study. 30 ECTS credits normally represent the workload for one semester. Credits are awarded only when the course has been completed and all required examinations have been passed. At LUT one ECTS credit equals 26 hours of student workload.
