The aim of the project was to study and analyse the biomass potential suitable for energy production purposes and develop biofuel supply logistics in the region of Southeastern Finland. The main focus in the project was set for forest fuels, but also other local biomass, such as agricultural products were observed.
Prospects of replacing biofuel road transports with long-distance transport methods (railroad and waterway) were examined in terms of economic and environmental influences. The results were information about the cost-structures and emissions of alternative transport chains. Also, labor input rates and numbers of required machinery for each supply strategy were evaluated in the project.
The project was a part of the Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland and funded by the Employment and Economic Development Centre (ELY Centre) of Southeastern Finland. Other financing partners were Metsäteho Ltd., Hyötypaperi Ltd. and The Trade Association of Finnish Forestry and Earth Moving Contractors.
The final report of the project is available at DORIA web library.
