Development and Coordination of the Northern Dimension Institute (NDI)

NDI is an open network community of universities and research institutes combining expertise in the priority sectors of the ND policy, i.e. providing high-quality research, as well as education, in the fields of

  • energy and the environment
  • public health and social well-being
  • transport and logistics
  • culture and society

The concept of the Northern Dimension Insitute (NDI) was accepted in the Northern Dimension Senior Offcials' Meeting in Stockholm 12th of November. The Constitutive Meeting of NDI was held in Helsinki on 26th of November.

The main objective of the NDI development project is to strengthen coordination structure and activities of the recently established Northern Dimension Institute (NDI). Actors of NDI continuously follow the Northern Dimension Policy and provide research in the priority sectors of ND. The concept of NDI was created on May-October 2009 in cooperation among 14 universities from Scandinavia, Baltic States and Russia. Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Northern Dimension Research Centre (NORDI) acts as the first leading coordinator organisation of NDI. The coordination of LUT is complemented and supported by the work of St. Petersburg State University (Russia) and Lund University (Sweden). In addition, several other universities and research institutes actively take part in research and development of activities of NDI.

NDI is based on networked collaboration, and therefore organised coordination will be crucially important in building and maintaining all the activities of NDI particularly during the first years of the existence of NDI. The NDI Coordinator(s) will also act as keyperson(s) in bringing the actors of NDI together and keeping NDI network cohesive. Multidisciplinary and multinational research work planned and implemented in collaboration among several universities and institutes will be similarly important core activity of NDI than the monitoring work of the NDI Steering Group, and active coordination.

Secondly, in this Project the NDI Coordinator(s) together with the NDI Steering Group and other actors facilitate the establisment of the NDI Scientific Thematic Groups and enhance search and development of relevant project ideas. However, primarily the NDI Scientific Thematic Groups themselves are responsible for applying financing for their projects, and the other establisments of NDI support their efforts.
