CDMC - The Carelian Drives and Motor Centre

The Carelian Drives and Motor Centre (CDMC), established in 1998 in co-operation with ABB, is a centre of expertise operating in connection with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Lappeenranta University of Technology.

The CDMC’s key objectives and operations focus on high-quality, sustained research and development of electrical machines and drives. The centre operates in the well-equipped premises of the Laboratory of Electrical Drives Technology of LUT.

The CDMC generates, develops and executes innovative research operations and transfers the results of these projects to the product development and productization processes of ABB. Annually, the centre’s state-of-the-art research programs produce several master’s theses and doctoral dissertations that are of high scientific value and recognized in the international academic community. In the CDMC, some ten researchers are constantly completing their master’s theses and dissertations. The Research Director of the CDMC is Senior Researcher, D.Sc. (Tech) Markku Niemelä, and the Head of the Centre is Professor Juha Pyrhönen, who represents the Department of Electrical Engineering of LUT in the CDMC.

During the years 1998 and 2006, eleven doctoral dissertations have been published as outcomes of the research activities of the CDMC. In addition to this, a large proportion of the Master’s theses completed in the Laboratory of Electrical Drives Technology in conjunction with ABB are prepared in the CDMC.

Furthermore, the research activities of the CDMC have promoted co-operation also between other laboratories of the Department of Electrical Engineering and ABB.
