High speed technology has been studied at LUT since 1981. Research topics have been especially centrifugal compressors (also known as radial compressors). Several prototypes and test facilities have been built during the research.
In addition to published papers, a number of licentiate’s theses and doctoral dissertations have been completed in connection with the research.

As a result of the research done at LUT and HUT, High Speed Tech Oy Ltd has produced commercial centrifugal compressors based on high speed technology in Lappeenranta since 1996. The company is today owned by a renowned Swedish Cardo pumps Concern.
In 2004 the company moved to a new factory premises near Lappeenranta Airport. High Speed Tech Oy LTD manufactures 100 compressors annually and has a staff of 20 persons. A large proportion of the manufactured compressors are exported.
