The Master's Degree Programme in Mechanical Engineering has been running since 2003 and our first foreign students have graduated in 2005. The objective of this Master of Science programme is to educate experts in their own areas by providing students with latest knowledge and modern learning environment. LUT Metal Technology's extensive contacts with local, national and international industrial partners and research centres ensures that the subjects taught and methods used in teaching are up-to-date and reflect the needs of modern high technology industry. The lectures, exercises and laboratory work are conducted completely in English.
The Master's Degree Programme in Mechanical Engineering leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology and corresponds to 120 ECTS credits and two years of full-time studies. The first three semesters include 90 ECTS credits of classroom and laboratory instruction. The Master's thesis of 30 ECTS credits is conducted in the fourth semester after other courses have been completed. For the degree structure and courses included, please see the Studies section.
The Master's Degree Programme in Mechanical Engineering applicants can choose between two major subjects:
The major subject in “Design and Manufacturing” targeted for students who wish to become future technological leaders in the mechanical engineering industry. In this major subject the focus is particularly on future product design and production technologies. The programme aims to provide in-depth knowledge in design or production related areas, such as machine design, steel structures, welding technology, laser technology and production and sheet metal technology.
The programme maintains a balance between classroom lectures and laboratory work without forgetting the problem formulation and solving skills that are essential to any engineering discipline. It strives to develop creativity, professional independence, leadership and the capacity for continuing professional and intellectual growth. The programme also provides students with knowledge and skills for scientific doctoral studies in the field of mechanical engineering.
In the major subject in ”Packaging Technology” the emphasis is on packaging materials, converting and packaging technologies and the skills needed in the entire packaging chain. These major studies are taught as intensive education and can be pursued alongside full-time work. This programme is recommended especially for persons already working in packaging related businesses or wishing to pursue a career in the industry dealing with packaging.
Although packaging-related courses exist in many Nordic universities, “Packaging Technology" is the only Master's level programme for packaging that leads to the M.Sc. degree. The objective of this programme is to educate experts in packaging materials, converting and packaging technologies, who possess the skills to work in production, development, sales and marketing functions throughout the whole packaging chain. Graduates obtain work as experts in, for example, product development and design, management of design and production projects and technical sales in international business.
