Paper Technology

The most long-established research area of the Laboratory of Paper Technology involves the production processes of mechanical pulp. Research in this area started in the mid 1990s from washing technologies of mechanical pulp, which led especially to lowering the concentration of extractive agents and increasing the closing grade of the pulp production process.

Research on mechanical pulp production has subsequently continued in the following directions: the control of disturbing substances in bleaching, recovery of residual chemicals, optimisation of white water systems, development of new multistage bleaching methods, and adoption of more ecological bleaching alkali and other chemicals. White water systems and alternative chemicals resulting from this research are widely applied in the Finnish paper industry.
