After the Master’s degree, graduates have the possibility to complete the postgraduate degrees of Licentiate of Science (Technology), Doctor of Science (Technology) or Doctor of Philosophy at LUT. All doctoral students of the university belong to Graduate School of LUT, which covers all the disciplines of the university. In the Faculty of Technology, postgraduate studies are available in Energy Technology, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering or Environmental Technology.
A doctoral degree includes 60 ECTS credits of studies and a dissertation. Major studies cover 35-40 ECTS credits and studies supporting the field of research cover 20-25 ECTS credits.

When applying for postgraduate studies, the student, together with the supervisor, prepares a research plan and a preliminary study plan for doctoral studies, which are appended to the application. The final degree requirements must be accepted by the faculty council before the beginning of the preliminary examination of the dissertation.

The faculty council handles applications once a month.
The dates for meetings:
- in spring 2012: 18.1., 15.2., 14.3., 18.4., 16.5. and 20.6.
- in autumn 2012: 5.9., 3.10., 7.11., 30.11. and 21.12.
Please return the applications to the faculty study affairs services two weeks before the meeting. Admissions for postgraduate studies are granted by the rector based on the faculty council’s statement.
