Research focuses on technology management strategies, support systems for decision making, innovation processes, the management of product development, and the application of systems, methods and tools in industrial enterprises.
In addition, research on product systems plays a significant role in the department. Through the systematic analysis and development of product systems (e.g. product family thinking) companies can make their productisation, production and business opportunities considerably more efficient. In the research at the department, productisation has created a competitive edge e.g. in the instrument, construction component and software industries.
Research related to innovation systems concentrates on the creation, organisation and operation of multiactor, heterogeneous networks that promote innovation. Research is characteristically multi-disciplinary and emphasises especially research problems in the interface or middle ground of different disciplines. Research related to innovation systems is carried out in three intertwining subject areas:
- The beginning and dynamics of an innovation process
- The institutional organisation of innovation environments
- Regional innovation policies
