The annual application period is January - February, and studies start at the end of August. The application period for academic year 2012- 2013 is from 2 January to 14 February 2012.
Applications are handled through University Admissions Finland service which LUT uses for pre-processing of applications. Please read the instructions at: the Finnish University Admissions service (www.universityadmissions.fi). Please note that all applicants, both international and Finnish, will apply through the same system.
University Admissions Finland is a centralized service, which provides an online Application Form and offers technical help on how to fill it in. Technical help is only provided via e-mail and over the telephone by contacting University Admissions Finland. All application documents are sent to University Admissions Finland. Lappeenranta University of Technology carries out the student selections.
Master's Degree Programme in Information Technology will have a tuition fee from 2012 on. Please see www.lut.fi.en/admission for more information. More detailed information on application process you can find here: www.lut.fi/en/admissions.
Admission requirements:
Applicants should have a B.Sc. in Computer Science, Information Technology, Communications Engineering or equivalent corresponding to at least 3 years' of full-time academic studies (equivalent of 180 ECTS credit units in the Finnish university system). Students with a degree from University of Applied Sciences (AMK) are also eligible to apply, but some complementary studies are required. Students, who are still studying or awaiting results, may apply now but the degree must be completed and the degree certificate copy submitted to LUT by 13 July 2012.
Foreign students who have not completed a Bachelor’s degree in English in an EU/EEA country or in Australia, Canada, New Zealand or in the USA must have obtained an approved English language qualification (a minimum of TOEFL 80 iBT/550 PBT or Academic IELTS 6.0, or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) level A, B or C. University language certificates are not accepted).

TOEFL - University Admissions Finland's TOEFL Institution code is 3138. When filling out the TOEFL Registration form, please fill the code 3138 in the Score Report Recipient field.
IELTS - When filling out the IELTS Application form to take the test, please address the test results in section 24 (Institution Applications) to University Admissions Finland.
Fees: Please be prepared to pay your living expenses, lodging, student union fee and some study materials. On applying for a residence permit, student must demonstrate to Finnish Immigration authorities that he has a secure income i.e. at least the sum of 6000 € / academic year (500 €/ month) available for transfer for study purposes. We encourage students to look for funding possibilities in their country or international sources.
Final student selection is carried out at LUT. A personal (telephone-) interview with the IT Admission Committee is conducted at the end of the selection procedure to establish the applicant's motivation and commitment to pursuing an education.
Students starting in M.Sc Programme are expected to have following skills:
Students majoring in Intelligent Computing are expected to have a command of engineering mathematics, especially statistics, matrix calculations and numerical methods. The students are expected to be able to program and justify a choice of data structures and algorithms that solve a given information processing problem. Furthermore, the students must have basic knowledge in theoretical computer science as well as understanding of information technology as a whole including hardware, operating systems, and software levels.
A student in intelligent computing must be able to design and implement a program that solves an information processing problem based on a given specification. A student must be able to work both independently and as a part of a team in different kinds of projects. The education is given in English, thus good communication skills in English are necessary both orally and in writing.
Students with major in Communications Software are expected to master engineering mathematics, especially statistics, discrete mathematics, and trigonometric series. From physics the areas covered are both electronics and wave motion. A student is expected to have basic knowledge in wired and wireless communication systems and in protocols in communications.
A student should be able to design and implement a program that is transferring information between two or more computers or terminals. She/he can work independently and act as a responsible member of a group. She/he is able to communicate in English both orally and in written form.
Students majoring in Software Engineering have understanding of basic engineering mathematics. The students are expected to have an understanding of the role of software and information systems in modern business. In addition, the students need understanding of programming, basics of software analysis and design methodologies, and project management. Knowledge of operating systems and software development environments will make learning easier.
The student must be able to design and implement a program that uses database through a graphical user interface. The students are expected to be able to work both individually and in project groups. The students are also expected to have a good command of English language.
