Doctoral studies

In addition to dissertation (doctoral or licentiate thesis), postgraduate studies at the Lappeenranta University of Technology include:

• Studies in the field of research 35-40 study points
• Studies supporting the field of research 20-25 study points
• A total of 60 study points

Postgraduate studies are planned in cooperation with the supervising professor. The final requirements towards the degree will be accepted by the faculty council before the pre-examination process of the thesis is initiated.

The studies can be completed as:
• book exams on scientific literature in the field (such as doctoral theses)
• postgraduate courses (such as those provided by various doctoral programmes and the university)
• other scientific accomplishments (such as conference presentations if they are not included in the dissertation)

The field of research (major) is the subject that has been included as such in the application for admission to postgraduate studies. Studies in the field of research should consist of postgraduate level university studies.

Studies supporting the field of research should form a university level module that supports the research. The supporting studies should consist of one or, more commonly, more than one subject; however, they should be other than the actual field of research. Normally, the supporting studies should correspond to advanced studies in their level of requirements.
