The South Karelian Institute

The South Karelian Institute (SKI) is a multidisciplinary research unit of the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT). The South Karelian Institute's task is to combine sciences in its research and increase regional expertise. The institute's business also supports the region's education and cultural work.

SKI has the courage to adopt new ideas with open-mindedness and the desire for collaborations that go beyond the boundaries of one discipline, both nationally and internationally. The institute actively participates in discussions on society while providing a multi-disciplinary perspective. A further aim of the activities is to promote future well-being, such as diversified skills, an open atmosphere and collaboration based on trust.

The research areas at the South Karelian Institute include boundaries that shape regions, the relationship between humans and the environment, the importance of culture to society and well-being and the actions of organisations as part of their surrounding society.

Research

The South Karelian Institute carries out independent scientific research and participates in research and study projects initiated by various parties in the province of South Karelia. As a flexible unit, the institute can quickly undertake topical research projects.

The research projects aim to be multidisciplinary. Long-term research projects provide basic research information on the social, economic and cultural development of the province and the neighbouring regions. Short-term studies target smaller and more clearly defined questions. The scientific study of regionally significant themes and problems also provides information of national and international interest.
