Citizens of EU/EEA Countries and Switzerland

Studies within higher education and taught in a language other than Finnish or Swedish are tuition free for nationalities within

  • The European Union (EU)
  • The European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Switzerland
    • To prove your citizenship, you must enclose a copy of a valid passport or national ID card with your citizenship included on the document.
       

Citizens of Non-EU/EEA Countries

Citizens of the non-EU/EEA countries (excluding Switzerland) must pay a tuition fee for each academic year.

  • Tuition fee for LUT University: EUR 10 000 / each academic year
     

YOU ARE HOWEVER, NOT REQUIRED TO PAY A TUITION FEE, IF YOU ARE:

  • Non-EU/EEA citizen having a Permanent Residence Permit Card in Finland (P)
  • Non-EU/EEA citizen having a Long-Term Resident's EU Residence Permit Card in Finland (P-EU)
  • Non-EU/EEA citizen having a Fixed-Term Continuous Residence Permit Card in Finland (A)
  • Non-EU/EEA citizen having an EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland
  • Non-EU/EEA citizen having an EU Blue Card in Finland
    • Your residence permit card or residence card must be granted by The Finnish Immigration Service
       

YOU ARE MOST LIKELY NOT TO PAY TUITION FEE IF YOU ARE:

  • Non-EU/EEA citizen but married to a Finnish citizen
  • Non-EU/EEA citizen but a family member to EU/EEA citizen having a right to reside in Finland
    • Your residence permit card or residence card must be granted by The Finnish Immigration Service

Scholarships at LUT University

LUT University Scholarship Programme

Scholarships are offered for students with a non-EU/EEA nationality (excluding the Swiss students), who are applying through Regular Admission to Master's Programme/s at LUT University (taught in English) and who are required to pay a tuition fee.

Partner University Scholarship Programme at LUT University

Scholarships are offered for students from the partner universities with a nationality of a non-EU/EEA country (excluding Switzerland), who are applying through Double Degree Admission or Trilateral/Joint Degree Admission to a Master's Programme at LUT University (taught in English) and who are required to pay a tuition fee.

3 Different Categories for Scholarships

  • 50% Tuition Fee Scholarship: Covering for 50% of the tuition fees
  • 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship: Covering for 100% of the tuition fees
  • Full Scholarship: Covering for 100% of the tuition fees in a 2-year Master's Programme plus, the living costs for EUR 5 600,00 per year
    NOTE: All the Programmes are not offering Full Scholarships.

There are NO scholarships offered for the first academic year in the following programmes: Biorefineries, Industrial Design Engineering and Software Product Management and Business.
 

How to Apply for a Scholarship?

When required to pay a tuition fee, you are eligible to apply for a scholarship when applying through Regular Admission / Double Degree Admission / Trilateral/Joint Degree Admission.

  • You will apply for a scholarship on the same application form when applying for the Master's Programme.
  • You will apply for a scholarship in general, not for a scholarship in a certain category.
  • No additional documents for applying for the scholarship are required/considered.

No Specific Criteria for Eligibility

Other than the citizenship being a non-EU/EEA one, there is no specific criteria for being eligible to apply for a scholarship.
 

How are the Scholarships Awarded?

A limited number of scholarships for each programme* will be granted in the order of the highest points achieved in the academic evaluation during the admission process. Preliminary statements about chances on possibly being granted with a scholarship or not unfortunately, cannot be given as it all depends on the other applicants as well.

*There are NO scholarships offered for the first academic year in the following programmes: Biorefineries, Industrial Design Engineering and Software Product Management and Business.
 

Remaining & Upgrading the Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded for the 1st academic year with an option for the 2nd academic year, if successfully completing your studies as expected on the first year.

To Remain the 1st Year Scholarship

To be able to remain the scholarship awarded to you for your 1st academic year, you must have completed

  • a minimum of 60 ECTS credits of studies included in your personal study plan.

These 60 ECTS credits minimum must be included on your Transcript of Records by the end of the academic year (July 31) at the latest.

Upgrading the 1st Year Scholarship (50% Tuition Fee Scholarship) 

You have a possibility to upgrade your 50% Tuition Fee Scholarship awarded to you for your 1st academic year up to a 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship for your 2nd academic year, if having completed

  • a minimum of 60 ECTS credits of studies included in your personal study plan with a GPA of at least 4.00

These 60 ECTS credits minimum must be included on your Transcript of Records by the end of the academic year (July 31) at the latest. Note: A scholarship application is required.

There is no possibility to upgrade a 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship.

If Not Having Been Awarded a Scholarship on Your 1st Academic Year

If not having been awarded a scholarship for the 1st academic year, but successfully completing the studies, you are able to apply scholarship for your 2nd academic year.

  • 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship: a minimum of 60 ECTS credits with a GPA of min. 4.00 
  • 50% Tuition Fee Scholarship: a minimum of 60 ECTS credits with a GPA of min. 3.75 

These 60 ECTS credits minimum must be included on your Transcript of Records by the end of the academic year (July 31) at the latest. Note: A scholarship application is required.

When No Scholarships Were Offered for the 1st Academic Year

If there were no scholarships to be applied for in the programme for the 1st academic year, you are able to apply for a scholarship for the 2nd academic year.

  • 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship: a minimum of 60 ECTS credits with a GPA of min. 4.00 
  • 50% Tuition Fee Scholarship: a minimum of 60 ECTS credits with a GPA of min. 3.75

The Fulbright - LUT University Graduate Award

The Fulbright student award competition is open to students from the United States of America who have completed at least a Bachelor's Degree.

There is a different application period, a separate application process as well as criteria for the Fulbright Scholarship.
