Environmental management system

LUT takes environmental issues and their management into consideration in its organisational management and development, supported by an environmental management system. The system's most important role is to help in the university's holistic management of environmental issues.

The Green Campus operating model is a concrete example of the university's environmental activities through which the university promotes environmental well-being through its research and education.  The environmental management system brings the Green Campus closer to everyone's daily life and makes it concrete what Green Campus is all about. The system supports our strategic operating model and creates the framework for the development of environmental matters now and for the future.

The environmental policy which is recorded in the system commits the university to maintain and develop its management of environmental issues and the knowledge of its staff in environmental issues.

In addition to the environmental policy, the main sub-areas of LUT's environmental management system are the three environmental perspectives for: A) Scientific research and academic education, B) Energy, the use of natural resources, waste and transport, C) Environmental cooperation with stakeholders.

Environmental objectives, i.e. long term plans, have been established for each of these environmental perspectives. Progress towards them is being made through actions integrated to university's normal activities. The programmes help the university to minimise its environmental impact and to reinforce the positive environmental effects.

The impact of the environmental policy and measures is evaluated and developed in accordance with the principles of continuous improvement.  The main tools in the implementation of the environmental policy and its main objectives are the measurements which are used to monitor operations. Monitoring enables the university to systematically assess its environmental impact. The objective is continuous improvement in the level of environmental protection.

WWF's Green Office logo

LUT has received the Green Office logo and diploma awarded by the WWF. Green Office is an environmental programme intended for offices that has been developed by WWF Finland. Its objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the workplace and to reduce the ecological footprint. Green Office motivates staff to make every day ecological decisions, improve their knowledge about the environment and to produce cost savings.  The system benefits the organisation and the environment.

Obtaining the Green Office logo requires LUT to have an environmental programme that includes concrete actions as well as targets to reduce actions that are harmful to the environment.

The criteria set include reducing greenhouse gas emissions through saving energy, reducing, recycling and sorting waste, taking the environment into account in procurement and making employees aware of the Green Office operational objectives.

In practice, the measures mean such things as

  • Reduce the paper used in printing and photocopying by ten per cent (the university, for example, has programmed all its photocopiers and printers to produce double sided documents)
  • A proportion of energy consumption will be generated onsite using solar and wind power
