New minor subject in Sustainability for all faculties
LUT's 2013-2014 study guides in Finnish and English will include a new minor subject entitled Sustainability. The minor subject will be targeted for third-year Bachelor's students and Master's students in all degree programmes. The module will be coordinated by the Degree Programme in Environmental Technology.
The purpose of the courses in the subject will be to provide students with an understanding of how to utilise sustainability-related knowledge in business development.
Taking sustainability issues into consideration has become necessary for business enterprises due to e.g. legislation and an increase in environmental awareness. The challenges also generate business possibilities that should be recognised in the development of new technology.
LUT has tackled the issue by integrating sustainable development and its challenges into education and research. According to Professor Risto Soukka, Head of the Degree Programme in Environmental Technology:
"The professional world demands understanding of sustainability challenges, their solutions and how businesses can achieve added value in the pursuit of sustainability. The new minor subject offers all LUT students an opportunity to include sustainability into their studies and have it documented in their transcript. Students of Environmental Technology already study these matters in their major subject."
The minor subject consists of elective courses in sustainable development and the compulsory course Introduction to Sustainability. Each degree programme will include a description of the Sustainability minor studies in their section of the study guide.
The degree programmes will adapt the module to their own curriculum. Degree programme specific minor subject modules will be approved by the faculty.
