LUT’s physical sciences strong in THE subject ranking – now among the top 400 universities
LUT University improved its position in the 2020 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking for physical sciences subjects. LUT ranks among the top 301-400 universities worldwide, and placed second among Finnish Universities.
"Subject rankings are based on performance facts among peers in the same field of science. Thus, they provide us with a relevant tool to monitor our development", says Jari Hämäläinen, LUT's Vice-rector for research.
LUT was ranked 401-500 in the corresponding listing in 2019, so it took a significant step towards the top universities engaging in research in physical sciences. This year the physical sciences ranking has expanded to include 1054 universities, up from 963 last year.
The 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings for physical sciences uses the same 13 performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields. It highlights the universities that are leading across mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, geology, and environmental, earth and marine sciences subjects.
LUT performs particularly well in industry income and international outlook indicators, where it scores the best results in the national comparison. LUT's scores compared to the previous year improved most in citations.
"Citations indicate the relevance and impact our research has in science. I'm particularly pleased to see positive steps towards the global top in that", Hämäläinen concludes.
