LUT among 300 best universities

Lappeenranta University of Technology, LUT is one of the world's 300 best universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE).  LUT ranks between 276 and 300. Of Finland's universities, LUT is the second-best technical university, and the third-best of all universities in the country.

According to estimates by UNESCO, there are about 17,000 universities in the world. This puts LUT in the top two percent of the university world on a global scale.

"LUT has taken giant steps forward in recent years. We've steadily worked our way up through the ranks and are now in the big league. This kind of exceptional success story has been made possible by the university's atmosphere of getting things done swiftly, its concentration on core skills, and its optimum size", says Chairman of the LUT Senate Tuomo Rönkkö.

"We have made courageous choices. Our focused and meaningful strategy is bringing results. LUT can be compared to a rapidly rising growth company whose youthful vitality and open-mindedness are turning it into an internationally credible player", says President Anneli Pauli.

As usual, universities of the English-speaking world are at the top of the list: California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Harvard and Oxford.  Caltech, which is at the top of the list, is compact in size and well focused - just like LUT. Of the Nordic universities, only Karolinska Institute, Stockholm University and Uppsala University placed among the top 100 universities in the world. Of Finnish universities University of Helsinki ranked 103 and Aalto University from 251 to 275. University of Tampere, University of Jyväskylä, University of Turku and University of Eastern Finland were ranked from 301 to 400.

THE is one of the world's most prestigious university performance tables. It puts the 400 best universities in the world in ranking order. The material is produced by Thomson Reuters. The areas under assessment are research, teaching, internationalism, and funding. The listing is made on the basis of 13 indicators. LUT took part in the THE ranking for the first time.
