LUT leaps to global top 400 in THE ranking

LUT University is among the world's top 400 universities in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. LUT's position is 351-400 among the 1527 universities listed. In the previous year, LUT was ranked in the top 501-600.

THE is one of the world's most highly regarded university rankings. The areas it assesses are research, citations, teaching, international outlook, and industry income. The rankings are based on 13 indicators measuring the universities' performance.

LUT performs particularly well in industry collaboration and research. Based on industry income and research performance, LUT was ranked within the world's top 25 per cent.

"The global competition between universities is becoming more intense, as new universities, particularly from Asia, are improving their rankings. Despite this, we managed to improve our position significantly," says Jari Hämäläinen, LUT's Vice Rector for Research.

The 2021 ranking has been expanded from last year's 1397 universities to include 1527. LUT ranks fifth among the nine Finnish universities in this year's ranking.

Greatest improvement in citations

LUT's score in citations improved the most compared to the previous year.

"The number of scientific publications has traditionally been a key performance indicator to universities. Nowadays, however, the emphasis is on impact, and citations are a way to measure that. This ranking result shows that our impact in the international science community has increased."

Hämäläinen mentions doctoral education as an area to be improved.

"The ratio between awarded doctoral degrees and academic staff is an example of where we can improve our results. Our target for doctoral degrees, set by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, will be higher in the coming years. Giving out more doctoral degrees will help us in these international comparisons in the future," Hämäläinen concludes.
