LUT's future name: LUT University

Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) will in the future be known as LUT University. The aim is to adopt this new marketing name on 1 August 2018. The name change is connected to LUT's stronger presence in Lahti and the establishment of a new higher education group.

Also the official name of the university will be changed. Changes to the official name must be approved by the Parliament, as university names are provided for in the Finnish Universities Act. The longer Finnish version proposed to the Parliament is Lappeenrannan-Lahden teknillinen yliopisto LUT – in English, the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT. In everyday use, the shorter forms would take precedence – LUT-yliopisto in Finnish and LUT University in English.

"We will continue to be LUT, and we are proud of being able to incorporate Lahti solidly into our official name," says Rector Juha-Matti Saksa, LUT.

The new name follows existing practices regarding university names, and it has been formulated in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Culture. Also the Institute for the Languages of Finland was heard in the matter.

"Being able to maintain the abbreviation LUT is a very positive matter because we will also maintain the recognisability, uniqueness and identity related to it. We will also avoid expenses related to the adoption of a completely new name and thus be able to focus our resources fully on education, research and societal impact," Saksa explains.

The university's new name will be adopted in the autumn of next year to avoid confusion in the upcoming application round in the spring.

The corporate group that will be composed of LUT, Saimaa University of Applied Sciences and Lahti University of Applied Sciences will be called the LUT Group. In the future ownership structure, the universities of applied sciences will be LUT's affiliates, and in accordance with the international model, the university will head the higher education consortium.

"The LUT Group's name depicts the entity that we are building. The university and the universities of applied sciences will all have their own names and continue to operate independently, but we will have a shared strategy," relates Saksa.
