Mika Sillanpää again one of the world's most cited researchers – only Finnish researcher listed in two fields of science

LUT University's professor in green chemistry Mika Sillanpää has been recognised on the Highly Cited Researchers 2019 list. The global list by Clarivate Analytics consists of researchers whose publications represent the very best in their field.

Professor Mika Sillanpää

Professor Sillanpää, head of the green chemistry department at LUT, is the only Finnish researcher who was listed in two fields of science this year. Sillanpää earned ranking in both Engineering and Environment and Ecology lists. Of all the researchers in the world, only about 400 are ranked in more than one field of science.

A total of 26 researchers from Finnish universities or research institutes feature on the 2019 list. For Sillanpää this is the third consecutive year he has been ranked, as he was listed on the Engineering list also in 2017 and 2018.

The publications are assessed based on the number of times they have been cited. The researchers who have qualified for the Highly Cited Researchers list have the most publications in their field of science that rank in the top one per cent by citations in that publication year.

Citations have been assessed from papers published in the Web of Science over the past ten years. The number of citations is an indicator of how well a researcher's publications are known around the world and of their impact.

Professor Sillanpää joined LUT's science community in 2010, and he has conducted research in water purification and the availability of clean water throughout his career. Currently his research group focuses mainly on recovering resources from waste streams. The group also seeks solutions to e.g. micro plastic removal.

Sillanpää has published over 700 internationally refereed scientific papers. Overall, he has over 1000 publications, which have been cited over 28 000 times. He has supervised nearly 45 doctoral dissertations. In addition, he has acted as a reviewer in more than 240 academic journals.

The department of green chemistry, based in Mikkeli and led by Sillanpää, has collaborated with over 150 leading research partners worldwide.
