Professor Aki Mikkola receives teaching award
The Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion has given Professor Aki Mikkola its annual Hyvä opettaja (good teacher) teaching award. Aki Mikkola is a professor of mechanical engineering at the LUT School of Energy Systems.
The foundation states that Mikkola is a highly regarded expert in his field and an active researcher who is able to convey the most recent research-based knowledge intelligibly to students. He employs digital technology during lectures to make sure that the subject areas taught are understood. The lectures can be followed remotely in real time and viewed later as recordings.
Student feedback highlights Mikkola's ability to motivate students through practical examples of how the topic areas of lectures are applied in industry.
Based on student feedback, LUT's Student Union chose Aki Mikkola as Lecturer of the Year in 2013. LUT gave him the Teacher of the Year award in the field of technology in 2014.
In addition, the Finnish Foundation for Technology Promotion gave Post-doctoral Researcher Toni Björninen its annual young researcher award. The awards are 15 000 euros.
