Sustainability Week on the Lappeenranta campus and online in November

The Lappeenranta campus will set the stage for Sustainability Week at the beginning of November. Local residents will also have an opportunity to visit the campus after the long COVID-19 break.

The Lappeenranta campus in Skinnarila will host Sustainability Week on 1–5 November. Sustainability Week will be organized by LUT University and the LAB University of Applied Sciences in collaboration. Some of the events are accessible online for example from the Lahti campus.

The week is mainly targeted for LUT and LAB staff and students. Sustainability Manager Kati Koikkalainen says that the event especially aims to engage people in-house and introduce them to sustainability issues.

"We want to highlight the individual's role and opportunities to curb climate change. We will offer sustainability-related information and tools to our community," Koikkalainen explains.

The events' topics include dealing with eco-emotions with the help of a social psychologist, environmentally friendly food and vegan pastries, ethical problems of the clothing industry, and a documentary film on the environmental challenges of the electronics industry. In addition, the main lobby of the university will house a flea market and waste sorting point.

"Sustainability is a key part of LUT's and LAB's strategic activities, and all new students will be inducted into sustainable thinking. We have planted trees with students and encouraged employees to volunteer for charity during working hours," Koikkalainen sums up.

The campus doors will also open to the public

Sustainability Week will offer activities on the Lappeenranta campus from Monday to Friday. There will be events in both Finnish and English.

Each day has its own theme: Monday 1 November is biodiversity day. The events will include building insect hotels and a lecture on biodiversity protection. Thursday 4 November is climate change day. LUT professors will hold public lectures in the campus café on sustainable consumption, the hydrogen economy, and the threats and opportunities of the energy transition. The week will be opened by Ilkka Räsänen, Environmental Manager of the City of Lappeenranta.

Sustainability Week will be arranged in collaboration with stakeholder groups. It is part of the Greef Leaf activities organized and funded by the City of Lappeenranta. The event is held for the first time, and it will take place in Lappeenranta and online, but in the future, a live event will also be organized in the other campus city, Lahti.
