Before arrival

Before studies begin, we highly recommend you start following LUT’s social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube to get to know the campuses and university services and start engaging with the LUT community.

All first-year students are also invited to join our Newcomers groups on different platforms, where you can ask anything about arrival and the start of studies:

Check your email regularly to ensure you have the latest information and instructions from the university. Before your studies start, you will likely receive arrival instructions, the programme for orientation week, your tutor’s contact details, and information about what to expect as a new member of the LUT community.

Tutors

As a new student, you may be moving to a completely new country, or at least a new city. To ensure you have an easier transition to student life at LUT, each student is assigned a peer tutor. A tutor is a senior student – usually in the same or a similar degree programme as you. Tutors chosen by the university are a go-to resource for newcomers’ questions regarding student life, campus services, and getting to know the city.

The tutors – once newcomers themselves – know what you are going through and are eager to help you integrate at LUT. Tutors are assigned several students from the same degree programme, and they make up your tutor group. Your peers in your tutor group will be the first friends you make on campus, and you will meet up with the group throughout the first year of studies.

You can also reach out to your tutor to grab a coffee, meet up for lunch, or have a chat when something is on your mind or if you have questions. The tutors and tutor groups ensure no newcomer is left behind when they start their studies at LUT. Tutors are usually assigned to newcomers before mid-August.

Arrival at LUT campuses and regional units

If you are coming to Lappeenranta, you will be asked to send your arrival information (name, mobile phone number, arrival date and time, and means of transportation) to LUT Student Services no later than three weeks before the date of arrival. You will receive an arrival information form by e-mail to provide the information in advance.

When you arrive in Lappeenranta, you will be met by an LUT driver who will give you your LOAS apartment key and drive you to your LOAS apartment to meet your tutor. The service is offered only to students arriving from outside of Finland. If you live in Finland, you collect your keys from LOAS yourself and arrange your own transportation to your apartment. If you are not eligible for the LUT driver/key service, you should contact your tutor and set up a meeting on campus at a time that suits you both.

If you’re driving to Lappeenranta yourself, you will not be eligible for the driver/key service. Furthermore, the driver/key service is available only for those in student housing (LOAS or temporary housing arranged by the student union).

If you are coming to Lahti, your tutor will ask for your arrival details in advance.. Your tutor – a senior student in Lahti – will meet you when you arrive. The tutor will show you around Lahti and help you settle in at the university. If you are staying in student housing, contact Lahden Talot to get your keys.

If you are coming to Kouvola, you will be asked for arrival details via Telegram in advance. You can ask about any practical details directly from your tutor. If you are staying in student housing, contact Kouvolan Asunnot directly to get your key.

If you are coming to Mikkeli, you will be contacted prior to your arrival and asked about your residence permit and your plans to attend the orientation days. If you are staying in student housing, contact MOAS to get your key.

Note, that you will need to arrange your own transportation to our campuses. Further information about arrival at our campuses and regional units is available on eLUT.

Orientation days

In-person attendance is mandatory on the first day of orientation (or online in force majeure cases). During the orientation days, students register for courses and receive all the information they need to start their studies. Bring your laptop to the orientation days – you will need it.

Sessions during orientation include introductions to degree programmes and information about study services, course registration, student organisations, the campus city, and the student union. You will also find out how to get your student ID and student discounts and learn about the Finnish culture.

Your tutor can help you navigate the orientation schedule and answer questions on any topics shared during orientation week. The tutors may not have all the answers, but they are eager to help you find the right person to ask. 😊

Student account

You should activate your LUT student account following the instructions on eLUT before the orientation. If you have trouble activating your account, don’t worry. You can also do it during the orientation days. Ask your tutor for help.

We hope you’re as excited about coming to LUT as we are about meeting you!
