This research area examines how software affects people, organizations, communities, and society. It focuses on understanding how software contributes to sustainable, inclusive, and socially responsible outcomes. This includes supporting the green transition through the broader effects of software, such as changes in behaviors, services, and systems. Our research explores how civic technologies create public value and social impact, how data supports sense-making and decision-making, and how software can better reflect the needs, values, well-being, agency, and security of the various people it serves.
Infrastructure
Our research is supported by the following laboratories:
Coder Lab
LUT's usability and interaction lab, specializing in Internet of Things interactions. The lab has an observation room with a one-way mirror and overhead cameras, and supports controlled experiments, co-design, studies with wearables and other interaction devices, and physical prototyping.
ChainLab
A research infrastructure for secure, intelligent, and decentralized systems, covering AI for cybersecurity, blockchain for security and privacy, federated learning, and software vulnerability detection and repair.
AI and HCI Behavioural Lab
Located on the Lahti campus, the lab studies how people interact and collaborate with intelligent systems, using eye tracking, physiological sensors, brain activity measurement, and extended reality.
