Hanna Paulomäki

Biography
I hold a MSc in Ecology from the University of Helsinki with minors in environmental biology and environmental law (University of Lapland). I work as a researcher in energy systems sustainability, focusing on the intersection of ecological sciences and energy technology. Currently I work as a doctoral researcher in the Energy and Society Research Group at LUT and is a visiting researcher at Aalto University.
My academic focus lies on renewable energy systems, and systemic approaches to sustainability transitions within planetary boundaries. In my PhD, I examine the socio-ecological impacts of land use change driven by renewable energy expansion. In my research I integrate spatial analyses and modeling with environmental and societal dimensions of energy systems. Moreover, I have lead, co-edited and co-authored with a multidisciplinary team of experts an open access textbook Designing Renewable Energy Systems within Planetary Boundaries (Springer, 2025).
In addition to my academic roles, I have almost 20 years of professional experience in international environmental organizations working on environmental policy with focus on climate, biodiversity, sustainable use of natural resources and resolution of environmental conflicts.
