The Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings evaluate universities based on how they promote the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The ratings were formerly known as the THE Impact Rankings.
In climate action, LUT continued its success and ranked ninth in the world. This follows a familiar pattern: in recent years, LUT has repeatedly been among the top global performers in SDG 13, with rankings varying between 9 and 30.
“Our outstanding ranking in climate action shows that LUT is one of the top universities in the world. We’re genuinely committed to tackling climate change and providing science-based solutions to one of the greatest challenges of our time,” says Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, provost at LUT University.
LUT also performed strongly in several other Sustainable Development Goals. In Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), it ranked 31st. LUT also improved its positions in SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth) and SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure).
Overall, LUT once again ranked among the global top 200 out of 1,603 universities. Three Finnish higher education organisations were included: LUT, the University of Vaasa, and the LAB University of Applied Sciences, which is appearing in the ratings for the first time.

In the global top 100 in citations
The QS World University Rankings has also published its latest results. In the QS Rankings 2027, LUT came in 390th out of the 1,504 universities listed.
LUT continued performing especially well in the citations per faculty member indicator, where it was 91st globally and among the top 10 per cent in the world. It was also the top-ranked Finnish university in this indicator.
A high number of citations indicates that other researchers consider LUT’s work valuable enough to reference in their own studies. Other areas of strength include sustainable development, the number of international students, and the international faculty ratio.
“We participate in international university rankings to gain insights that support the continuous development of our operations and our international impact,” Kallioinen-Mänttäri says.
