Abstract: This proposal for a workshop concerns how to develop more sustainably conscious and active global engineers. Specifically, we want to highlight the need to effectively implement teaching for sustainability in engineering curricula. The Faculty of Engineering (LTH) at Lund University will present multiple ongoing strategies for doing this. The specific strategies include:
- A grassroots teacher led initiative for course development and sustainability progression within a specific program or course;
- A proposed course on master’s (advanced) level to prepare students to take responsibility in the polycrises of an unknown future;
- Academic development efforts to facilitate teaching for sustainability across the entire university (with individual faculty-focused efforts, e.g., courses for teachers on teaching for sustainability)
The workshop aims to present these strategies within the context of an engineering faculty wishing to integrate teaching for sustainability into their programs. The model highlights the synergies between actions taken at various levels of the organizations, from upper management to ‘teachers on the floor’. The participants (who are likely to have varying backgrounds and roles in their respective institution) are then invited to provide feedback on this model as well as situate themselves, their own experiences and that of their respective institutions. The aim is to identify creative sustainability proposals which can be transferable between institutions. Questions which will asked, considering that students starting university now will start working approximately in 2030 and will continue working until 2080+ include the following:
- Why teach for sustainability?
- What are you doing at your institution?
- What more can be done?
- What can we do together?
Expected outcomes: The workshop is expected to lead to an exchange of ideas and practices for how teaching for sustainability can be more effectively integrated into our education. This exchange will include the dissemination of experiences of the organizers as well as the participants. The contextual model which will be presented can also provide a basis for further development, where exchanges made during the workshop will play a major role. The results from the workshop will be collected and eventually disseminated further to participants and other e.g., online or through other relevant forums (T.I.M.E.’s news, https://teachingsustainability.blogg.lu.se/). In addition, the workshop will work as a networking tool to connect like-minded individuals wishing to collaborate further. The key objectives of the session are:
- To disseminate and get valuable feedback on the teaching for sustainability strategies presented by the organizing group
- To inspire others to take similar actions as well as be inspired by actions taken by others
- To foster cooperation between institutions
- To share concrete examples of what education for the future means and needs
- To develop a statement of what we want to stand for in the future
