LUT University’s report on sustainability 2024 gives a comprehensive account of how LUT promotes the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on its campuses and in education, research, and societal interaction. LUT contributes to sustainable development through its three faculties; LUT Business School, the School of Energy Systems, and the School of Engineering Sciences which also includes social and communications sciences.

Collaboration with Cambridge University’s Clare Hall was LUT’s most important new initiative related to climate change and sustainability. As the world is in turmoil for many reasons, Rector Juha-Matti Saksa also emphasises fostering a sense of community at LUT.

The report relates the effects of LUT's research, education and other activities on sustainable development.

LUT came very close to its carbon neutrality target for scope 1 and 2 emissions by the end of 2024, but fuel-burning cars in the university’s fleet still make up a minor part (0.3%) of LUT’s carbon footprint

LUT continues to strive for net zero in 2050 in accordance with the initiative Race to Zero for Universities. LUT’s updated Climate Action Plan for 2025–2030 outlines a range of actions to achieve zero emissions in scopes 1 and 2 and to continue attempts to reduce indirect emissions in scope 3 in cooperation with partners and service providers, such as campus restaurants, business travel services, and campus property owners.

“In addition, we want to emphasise the positive environmental handprint, which refers to the positive impacts that the university’s education and research have on society and companies, such as lower emissions, saving raw materials, or protecting natural waters,” says Sustainability Manager Hanna-Leena Ottelin
