LUT is launching education and research in civil and construction engineering in Lahti. The Finnish- and English-language programmes will start on the Lahti campus in autumn 2027, and the related preparations are well underway.
LUT is currently seeking four professors for the fields of building physics and materials, sustainable infrastructure, building energy systems, and construction economics and business model transformation.
“We are looking for candidates who have strong construction industry insight and are eager to create new research and education that reflect LUT's vision,” says Development Director Kirsi Taivalantti.
The application period for the first two bachelor’s programmes in civil and construction engineering will be in spring 2027. A total of 60 students will be admitted to the programmes. Master’s programmes will start the following year.

Great opportunity for businesses and the region
The new field of education has been designed to meet the needs of businesses and society. The focus areas of LUT's civil and construction engineering research are technology-driven growth, business transformation, and infrastructure resilience. The focus areas have been designed from the start in collaboration with national and international partners to avoid overlap with other universities.
“We want to provide new knowledge that serves as a basis for innovations in technology, construction products, systems, and processes. The construction industry in the Päijät-Häme region is strong. Construction engineering students represent a significant opportunity for both businesses and the entire region,” Taivalantti continues.
In addition to recruitment and getting research started, the launch phase involves programme planning and marketing as well as building networks and corporate collaboration. The initiative is based on the decision by the Ministry of Education and Culture to grant LUT new educational responsibilities in civil and construction engineering. The City of Lahti, all Päijät-Häme municipalities, and foundations in the region are contributing funding to the new degree programmes.
