This autumn, around 1 800 new students will start on the Lappeenranta campus and nearly 700 on the Lahti campus. Additionally, there will be 34 new students in Kouvola and 17 in Mikkeli. A total of 300 tutors will be guiding the newcomers.

Before courses start, an orientation will be held at each location to introduce the first-year students to life in their new city. The orientations fall on the timeline from 19 to 29 August.

“You can see and hear the new students arriving, not only on campus but around town. There's so much energy! And the student population keeps growing every year, especially with more and more international students coming in,” says Tanja Karppinen, project manager of LUT’s First Year Experience.

The university is introducing four new master’s programmes. In Lappeenranta, the new programmes are in applied physics and electrical engineering. Meanwhile, Lahti will offer new master’s programmes in business and industrial engineering and management, in addition to the newly revised Executive MBA programme (EMBA). The business master's programme in strategic sales and the EMBA programme are part of LUT’s efforts to develop sales expertise, funded by a donation from Jalo and Anja Paananen.

Like all education at LUT, the new programmes support the university’s revised strategy, which focuses on achieving balance between humankind and the environment. The new strategic focus areas are planetary resources, the digital revolution, the energy transition, and business and society.

Torchlight parade by Lake Vesijärvi in Lahti, new campus landscaping in Lappeenranta

The start of the academic year will also feature lively student events.

"First-year engineering students and their tutors in Lahti will gather outside Sibelius Hall for a torchlight parade along the shore of Lake Vesijärvi on 2 September. That’s also where the local first-year students’ induction takes place, marking the beginning of their vibrant student life," says Florencia Gil Fernandez from LUT University's Student Union (LTKY).

"First-year students in Lappeenranta will become full-fledged members of the student community in the traditional and beloved induction ceremony on 4 September, following their guild’s traditions. After the ceremony, the students will celebrate at the end-of-orientation party," continues Veeti Salminen from LTKY.

Landscaping work on the Lappeenranta campus has given the main entrance area a fresh new look over the summer. The redesign emphasises community spirit and creates opportunities for a variety of events. The area also features a work of art designed by LAB University of Applied Sciences student Laura Lappi, selected through an art competition.
