Strategy, AI, and personnel development
LUT University’s impact is based on research and education. The System Earth strategy updated in 2025 emphasises a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to building a sustainable future.
The utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) was developed systematically throughout the organisation with the help of new tools, training, and operating models. AI utilisation improved productivity in teaching, research, and service provision.
The staff is LUT's key resource. Workplace well-being and professional expertise were developed in various ways: the LEAD leadership training programme continued, preparations were made for the adoption of a teacher track, and a succession planning model was put in place.
Stronger research and impact
The strategic development of research continued in alignment with the revised strategy, and particular investments were made in doctoral education. The development in international research funding was favourable; for example, LUT received European Research Council Starting Grant funding, and research activities developed considerably.
The number of both doctoral degrees and scientific publications increased notably, and the university was awarded 12 new patents.
Collaboration with industries and society deepened – especially in research and development projects with Danfoss, Kempower, and PEAB.
LUT's Junior University reached about 15,000 children and youth. Alumni activities were strengthened by establishing an Alumni Advisory Board and boosting alumni engagement.
Growth in programme range and student numbers
The number of students at LUT University continued to grow in 2025. A total of 9,127 students were enrolled at LUT – roughly 1,800 in Lahti and 7,100 in Lappeenranta. The number of completed degrees rose to 2,005.
In 2025, new master’s programmes were launched on the Lappeenranta campus in applied physics and renewable Power-to-X economy and on the Lahti campus in the management of organisational development and strategic sales. In addition, Lahti launched the new LUT Executive MBA programme.
In 2025, the university started preparations for the introduction of a Finnish-language chemical engineering bachelor’s programme on the Lahti campus in 2027 and an equivalent English-language programme in Lappeenranta in 2026. International bachelor's programmes continued to use rolling admission.
LUT University was granted educational responsibilities in civil and construction engineering. A related degree programme will start in Lahti in 2027.

Internationalisation and collaboration networks
LUT University maintained its strong international position. The university reached the global top 300 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the global top 200 in the THE Impact Rankings, sharing first place in Finland.
Collaboration in the European EULiST alliance deepened, and the ten universities involved developed joint modules and mobility models. LUT also continued its collaboration with Clare Hall of the University of Cambridge on themes related to climate change and sustainability.
LUT hosted ten international conferences in 2025: six in Lappeenranta and four in Lahti. A total of 1,363 international guests attended them. The conferences significantly increased the regional and national visibility and international impact of LUT Universities and consolidated LUT University's position as an organiser of high-level scientific events and a meeting place for scientists.
Financial growth and increasing investments
LUT University’s turnover rose to 147.0 million euros, which is roughly 10 per cent more than in the previous year. Funding by the Ministry of Education and Culture amounted to 72.7 million euros and external funding to 74.3 million euros. The relative share of external funding remained at nearly the previous year’s level, 50.5 per cent.
The university’s personnel saw a significant increase, with the number of staff members rising to 1,550. The increase focused particularly on research and teaching staff.
Expenses grew especially due to the increase in staff and pay settlements. The operating profit was -2.9 million euros as a result of planned strategic investments. Strategic investments were covered by returns on investments and funds and donations placed in reserves.
Investments and financial operations improved the overall result, and the financial year saw a profit of 7.7 million euros. The university's financial situation remained stable.
Particularly the uncertainties in the university’s operating environment highlight the importance of balanced financial management.
Future outlook
In line with its strategy, LUT University continues to grow and consolidate its position as a strong European research university. Focus areas include increasing international research funding, developing the range of education offered, and the systematic utilisation of artificial intelligence. Growth is supported by funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the strengthening of international research funding.
Investments made in 2025 lay the foundation for the university’s next stage of growth, where investments translate into stronger research, higher-quality education, and sustainable financial development.
