LUT University will launch a civil engineering degree programme in Lahti in 2027, aiming to strengthen research, modernise the construction industry, and pursue international growth. Professors are currently being recruited for the programme.

Kim Hagström was appointed as a part-time industry professor of building services engineering starting 1 April 2026. In his new position, Hagström will foster close collaboration between LUT, companies in the field, and other universities. He has strong ties to both industry and academia. He has built a long career at Halton and serves as the chair of the board of SFS Finnish Standards, Finland's national standardisation organisation.

“LUT's new degree programme aims to develop the construction industry internationally and strengthen it in Finland. I'm excited to help build a new field of study and to influence the future of civil engineering as an industry professor,” says Hagström.

The Curious People newsletter shares our solutions for helping build resilient communities, industry, and businesses while promoting the energy transition and the regenerative use of natural resources.

The programme aims to develop civil engineering education by addressing emerging challenges, such as sustainability, energy solutions, economics, and digitalisation, alongside the core technical foundations of the field. All civil engineering professorships will be located in Lahti, and a new department in the field will be established this year within the School of Energy Systems.

“Our goal is to train systems thinkers: people who understand civil engineering as a whole and grasp its broader impacts. We are happy to welcome an experienced, visionary expert like Kim Hagström to help us launch civil engineering education and research at LUT,” says Kirsi Taivalantti, development director at the LUT School of Energy Systems.
