LUT University collects annual feedback from master's graduates who completed their studies five years ago and doctoral graduates who graduated three years ago as part of the national Aarresaari network’s career survey. This autumn, the survey targets those who completed their master’s degrees in 2021 and their doctoral degrees in 2023.
By participating in the career survey, alumni can share their study experiences at the university and describe how their transition to the professional world has gone.
Alumni responses help degree programmes develop their educational content and ensure that education remains relevant. The results are also used for research and alumni’s experiences are important for current students who are just beginning their careers. In addition, survey responses affect university funding.
The response period runs from 1 October to 7 December. Alumni will be contacted personally via email, text message, or letter.
Last year, 41% of master's graduates and 36% of doctoral graduates from LUT responded to the survey. The following five key findings emerged from the results:
1. The employment rate of our alumni is high.
Despite the current labour market situation, the employment rate of master's graduates who completed their degrees five years ago and doctoral graduates who graduated three years ago is high. According to the survey, the unemployment rate among LUT master's graduates was only 3%.
2. LUT degrees are highly valued.
Our alumni believe that employers appreciate both the expertise gained at LUT and the degree itself. Among master's graduates, 78% reported being either satisfied or very satisfied with their degree. The corresponding figure for doctoral graduates was 81%.
3. Salaries remain competitive.
The salaries of LUT graduates are clearly above the national averages. Five years after graduation, the median salary of master's graduates is 5,100 euros per month. Also, the median salary of doctoral alumni also increased compared to the previous year.
4. The current labour market situation affects the quality of employment.
Although the survey results indicate low unemployment and competitive salaries among LUT graduates, the broader labour market situation in Finland is reflected to some extent in the quality of employment. The results show an increase in fixed-term employment contracts among master's graduates, especially international alumni.
5. Entrepreneurship education should be strengthened.
Only 25% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that entrepreneurship was presented during their studies as a potential career option. While LUT performs well in national comparisons, entrepreneurship-focused teaching should be strengthened and the entrepreneurial culture at the university further developed.
