The aim is to update the service structure to correspond to the scope of operations and uncertainties in the financial outlook and to offer more customer-focused services.

The costs of University Services have increased in relation to the university group's turnover. Changes in the scope of operations and uncertainties in the financial outlook of both LUT and LAB require evaluating the service structure and need for staff. In addition, the LAB University of Applied Sciences will initiate change negotiations that concern its entire staff due to the organisation's weakened financial situation, with cost-cutting pressure focusing on University Services.

The need for financial adjustments is 4.5 million euros. The aim is to build a service structure that supports the core missions and growth of both LUT and LAB, make customer journeys and responsibilities clearer, and increase operational flexibility.

The negotiations will focus on matters such as organising services around customer journeys, combining and reducing the number of roles, streamlining the management structure, adopting a joint role architecture, and utilising automation and different ways of producing services.

The negotiations do not concern the research and teaching staff.

Negotiations concern 569 staff members

The negotiations concern altogether 573 members of the university's so-called other staff. More specifically, 469 of them work in University Services, 87 in schools, and 17 in the university's management organisation.

According to the employer's initial estimate, the plan may lead to terminating the employment of up to 90 staff members, making up to 30 full-time positions part-time, and making unilateral changes to essential employment terms of up to 569 employees. Also, layoffs and changes to job descriptions, working methods, work and workspace arrangements, and regular working hours are possible.

The change negotiations will start on 7 October 2026, and they are expected to take approximately eight weeks. The ultimate duration will depend on the progress of the negotiations. Possible personnel measures would take place in stages after the negotiations are concluded.
