Why study environmental technology?

left

Climate change, resource scarcity, urbanisation, and the transition to clean energy are transforming our societies and industries. Solving these challenges requires engineers who can understand complex systems, evaluate the sustainability of technological solutions, and create positive environmental impact.

right

Environmental technology is closely connected to LUT University’s System Earth approach, which recognises that global sustainability challenges require integrated solutions across energy, water, materials, business, and society. Sustainability is embedded not only in the curriculum but also in the university’s research, partnerships, and campus culture.

What will you learn?

left

The programme provides a strong foundation in engineering sciences, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, programming, technical modelling, measurement systems, and engineering design. A distinctive feature of the programme is its strong emphasis on life cycle thinking and systems-level analysis. You will learn to evaluate environmental impacts across the entire life cycle of products, services, technologies, and infrastructure, helping organisations make more informed and sustainable decisions.

At LUT University, learning goes beyond the classroom. During your studies, you will work on practical projects, laboratory exercises, and modelling assignments that reflect real challenges faced by industry, cities, and society. You will learn to test, simulate, calculate, optimise, and evaluate technical systems while considering environmental, economic, and social perspectives.

The programme encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork. You will develop the ability to work with experts from different fields and communicate sustainability-related issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
