Nuclear Engineering Research

Our most important area of research is thermal hydraulics for nuclear power plants. Experimental studies and computer analyses in this field are conducted in cooperation with the Nuclear Safety Research Unit.

Our research into thermal hydraulics includes experiments in thermal and fluid dynamics as well as accident situation and safety analyses.

In addition, we are conducting research related to the fourth generation of gas-cooled reactors, especially in reactor physics and thermal hydraulics modelling.

We also take part in the national Safety of Nuclear Power Plants – Finnish National Research Programme (SAFIR) together with power companies, VTT (the Technical Research Centre of Finland), and the national Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority STUK. In addition, we are involved in an Academy of Finland research project and several EU research projects.
