The rapid digitalisation of society brings challenges that need to be addressed by social scientists. Maryam Shaheen is the first to obtain a Master of Social Sciences degree from LUT University. She sees a need for experts who can assess and anticipate the impacts of new technologies. Artificial intelligence, robotisation, and social media affect everyday life, well-being, and societal structures.

“Social scientists help understand the issues societies are facing and help make better decisions for the future,” Shaheen says.

Multidisciplinary approach as LUT’s strength

Shaheen moved to Finland from Pakistan. In her home country, she carried out psychology studies before applying to LUT University. She chose LUT particularly for its international reputation and ranking results.

Social sciences felt like a natural path for Shaheen, because she has always been interested in the organisational and societal impacts of societal, economic, and social changes. She applied to the Master’s Programme in Digital Social Sciences especially because of its multidisciplinary approach.

Shaheen appreciates the fact that LUT combines social sciences with technology and business.

“Economic structures, technological development, and societal processes are interconnected. Technological development is not only about technological solutions but also about understanding how they affect and benefit society,” Shaheen continues.

Praise for teaching quality and content

LUT has offered education in social sciences since 2023. The recent graduate is happy with the content and quality of her education. She encourages new students to keep an open mind during their studies.

“Especially courses related to robots, AI, and innovation policy were thought-provoking. One of the best courses that I took was Kathrin Komp-Leukkunen’s master’s thesis seminar, which – along with guidance from my supervisor Maud Revilhac – helped me complete my thesis successfully,” Shaheen describes.

Students can complete social sciences studies on LUT’s Lappeenranta campus. Shaheen raves about the campus and its many recreational activities.

“I enjoyed studying in Lappeenranta. The campus is peaceful and offers various activities for students in their free time. After classes, I balanced my studies with exercise, especially at the gym,” Shaheen says.

Her plans after graduation are clear.

“I plan to complete a doctoral degree and work as a researcher. I want to use my knowledge of social sciences in a meaningful way,” Shaheen concludes.
