FINEEC's recent audit shows that LUT University places strong emphasis on research, education, student-centred learning, internationalisation, and continuous improvement. LUT could further strengthen its education through more systematic monitoring and quality management.
"There is a strong culture of ambition at LUT and a consistent drive to excel across the organisation, with tangible results such as increased external research funding and a growing international student population,” says Professor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, chair of the audit team and vice-chancellor of Luleå University of Technology, in FINEEC's press release.
According to the audit team, LUT's operating culture is inclusive, and its strategy is grounded in regional and national needs as well as the university's own strengths and areas for development. LUT is characterised by a flat hierarchy and approachable leadership. The academic community is engaged, and collaboration with stakeholders, companies, and alumni works well.
The audit team identified the student community as one of LUT's major strengths. Students play a significant role in the university's operations, and their voice should be given even greater weight in the university’s decision-making.

Supporting the integration of international students
LUT chose internationalisation as the strategic theme for the audit. The rapid increase of international students over a short period shows that the university's strategic targets have been well achieved. The integration of international students and staff is supported in many ways.
However, experiences of the international campus culture vary between different groups, degree programmes, and campuses. The audit team emphasises the importance of inclusion and targeted measures to help international students integrate into the Finnish professional world and society. Especially Finnish language skills and collaboration with local businesses and industries should be strengthened.
Commitment to continuous improvement
According to the audit team, there is a strong commitment to continuous improvement at LUT. Staff and students pointed out strong teacher engagement, supportive learning environments, and the integration of research and industry perspectives into programmes. Support services for students and pedagogical support for staff were also identified as key strengths of the university. Areas for improvement included greater consistency in the quality management of education as well as stronger monitoring and institutional oversight.
FINEEC audits are valid for six years at a time. LUT's quality management system has now passed the audit four times: in 2026, 2021, 2015, and 2009. Passing the audit confirms that the university's operations and quality management system meet the national and European standards for quality management in higher education (ESG).
