The project aims to revolutionise healthcare provision by tailoring innovations to individual needs, especially in medical logistics and situational analyses. This initiative tackles healthcare challenges and reduces environmental impact by integrating technologies like semi-autonomous drones and a secure private 5G network powered by renewables. The project will strengthen Pyhtää’s airport in southeastern Finland, by establishing it as a crucial hub for equitable healthcare for underserved communities.

Efficiency is paramount in the project, achieved through the seamless integration of sensor and IoT devices for the economic automation of airport operations. Semi-autonomous electric drones play a dual role in bolstering airport logistics and healthcare capabilities, further reducing operational costs and carbon emissions. Establishing a central remote operations centre powered by clean energy and a private 5G network, complemented with national public safety network, enhances resource allocation efficiency across multiple airports, fostering greater inclusivity.

CAREWINGS-5G at the CEF and 5G for Smart Communities Conferences

In October 2025, the CAREWINGS-5G project coordinator attended the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Conference, organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) in Brussels. The event gathered stakeholders from across Europe to share knowledge and explore new opportunities for developing resilient digital infrastructure.
Following the CEF conference, the 5G for Smart Communities (5GSC) Conference was held. The 5GSC Support Platform is an EU initiative under the Connecting Europe Facility Digital program, designed to connect and inform stakeholders involved in 5G for Smart Communities projects. At the event, the LUT representative participated in networking activities with other project partners, met HaDEA, and discussed future collaboration opportunities with the 5GSC Director.

Connected Airports, Connected Drones

In September 2025, the CAREWINGS-5G project organized a presentation and discussion event at Pyhtää Airport (Helsinki-East Aerodrome). The event brought together representatives from public authorities, companies, and research organizations to explore new possibilities for using drones and digital infrastructure in public services. Speakers from the Finnish Air Rescue Society, LUT University, and XAMK University of Applied Sciences shared their views on how low-altitude drone operations — supported by a secure private 5G network and renewable energy — can improve logistics, emergency response, and healthcare delivery. The event attracted a diverse group of participants and included presentations from project partners such as Poutanet, Cumucore, Anarky Labs, Vaiscom and Healthfox.

Hosting this event at Pyhtää Airport supports the CAREWINGS-5G goal of developing the airport into a key location for testing and advancing digital and healthcare services for remote and underserved communities.
