The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings are a list of the world's best universities, assessing and comparing them in terms of performance. The recently released THE rankings 2026 show that LUT University has established its position among the world’s top universities. LUT retained its place in the top 251–300 even though the total number of universities rose by nearly 100.

“There are roughly 30 000 universities in the world, and an increasing number are making the ranking lists. It’s great to see we can maintain our position in the ever-growing group. However, we need to work even harder if we want to improve our position,” says Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, provost at LUT University.

Research quality yet again the strongest area

The areas assessed in the THE rankings are teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. Research quality was again LUT’s strongest area, but the university also achieved a high score in both industry and international outlook.

Published each autumn, the World University Rankings are THE's most widely recognised list and among the world's most highly regarded university rankings. This time around, the THE World University Rankings included nine Finnish universities, with LUT once again in shared third place.

In recent years, LUT has also excelled in THE impact and subject rankings. In the 2025 THE Impact Rankings, LUT was in the global top 30 in terms of climate action. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 by subject will be published in early 2026.
